Semco Partners is the successor of the SEMCO Group - a centrifuge manufacturer founded in the 1950s by Antonio Curt Semler. In the 1980s Antonio’s son, Ricardo Semler, took over the firm, modernized management practices, and expanded the company’s range by moving heavily into the service sector. Today, Semco Partners works with foreign companies to help them expand into the Brazilian market. They do this by employing a sophisticated joint venture model that combines Semco Style management practices with the partners’ expertise and product lines.
Ricardo Semler is a champion of the employee-friendly radical corporate democracy he implemented as CEO of Semco Partners for over 20 years. He believes that if we simply ask why we do things and devolve power to employees, we’re able to create wiser companies - ones that are simultaneously more productive and have a happier workforce. Ricardo is the best-selling author of the classic Maverick and The Seven-Day Weekend. He was Professor of Leadership at MIT’s Sloan School of Management and Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, and is working to bring radical corporate democracy to education through Lumiar School.
The Semco Style is based on Ricardo’s leadership philosophy and the programs offered by the Semco Style Institute have been developed in full cooperation with Ricardo and his team, the Semco Style Guardians – a select group of individuals who were first-hand involved in the success of the Semco Group.
The Semco Style Institute was originally founded by Ricardo Semler, along with three Dutch entrepreneurs – Arko van Brakel, Farouk el Kodady and Luuk Willems. The Semco Style Institute commenced operations in May 2016 in the Netherlands and is working with national and international partners to bring the Semco Style Institute programs to other countries, and to grow an international network of Semco Style Certified Consultants. Subsequently in these ventures to expand internationally, the Semco Style Institute South Africa was founded in January 2018 by three South African entrepreneurs – Johan Ludik, Gustav Griessel and Christiaan Grové.
